Obituary

Elder Steve Horton, (Kaboobee), as he was so affectionately called in the early days, was born on May 25, 1954 in St. Louis, Missouri to the union of the late TC Horton and Bessie Horton, both of whom preceded him in death. His two sisters, Carolyn and Denise and two nieces, Maria and Michelle also preceded him in death.

Steve was a product of the East St. Louis School District #189 where he attended Franklin Elementary School, Hughes Quinn Junior High School and Lincoln Senior High School, graduating in the class of 1973. While attending high school, Steve ran Cross Country as a distance runner and enjoyed playing basketball.

After graduating from high school, Steve went to work for the Leading Food Store in East St. Louis. He later went to work for the Serta Mattress Company for twelve years. This company moved, thus causing him to  seek new employment. He then landed a job with the Syncreon Manufacturing Company where he worked until retirement. Being a hard worker, dedicated to the work force, he went to work as a part-time worker for and sometimes beside his big brother, Tyree, at the Top Job Cleaning Company in St. Louis, Missouri.

Steve was reared in a loving home with parents who taught the children the value of loving God and accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior. As a result of this teaching, Steve was baptized and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost in 1996, dedicating his life to the ministry of Jesus Christ. He was ordained as an Elder in 1999 under the spiritual leadership of Suffragan Bishop John H. Pettiford and served under him until his passing. Steve was presently serving under District Elder Anthony D. Pettiford until God called him home on September 3, 2021.

Steve was truly a servant doing the work of the Lord; He served a president of the Men's Ministry for three consecutive years, president of Kenneth Hall Hospital Ministry until Its closing. He served on the Prison Ministry for three years. He was serving on the Usher Board, the Evangelistic Team, president of the Cottage Prayer Band, and president of the hospital ministry at Touchette Hospital until his health began to fail.

While attending the House of Prayer to All Nations Church, Steve met, and fell in love with, and married Beverly Ann Spraggins on June 14, 1997. They celebrated their twenty-fourth anniversary on June 14, 2021. He was a family man in every sense of the word. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, and provider who made sure his family neither wanted nor needed for anything that he could provide.

Steve enjoyed the outdoors. He treasured the walks in the park with Beverly. He would walk the first mile with her and lap her the next mile three times saying hi honey as he passed her up. He enjoyed fishing and would leave early in the morning returning at night, sometimes with fish and sometimes with none. He loved the family vacations and sometimes just riding in the car singing songs with his loud strong voice. The song he loved most was "I Hear God", his wife loved it too.

Steve had a very profound personality. He tried to show himself as tough but he was a gentle soul. He was truthful and sincere in his daily life encounters. He would say what he meant and would mean what he said, yet he would illuminate a dark room when he entered with his love, kindness, and understanding, one of strength and dignity trying daily to do God's Will here on earth.

Steve leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving and devoted wife of twenty-four years ~ Beverly Spraggins Horton; daughters ~ Kenyatta Cobin, Stefani (James) Gibson all of East St. Louis, IL, Tifani (Cedric) Brown, Fairview Heights, IL, Tammara Spraggins, East St. Louis, IL, and Deja Spraggins, Champaign, IL; two sons ~ Jamail Cobin and Jayden Spraggins, both of East St. Louis, IL; honorary daughter ~ Chanita (Red) Johnson of Fairview Heights, IL; fourteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three godchildren; sisters ~ Shirley (Reggie) Beard of Fairview Heights, IL, Maxine Willis of Belleville, IL, Paulette (Tony) Hill of Belleville, IL, Constance Harrell of Belleville, IL, and Audrey (Michael) Byrd of O'Fallon, IL; brothers ~ Tyree (Adriane) Horton of Ballwin, MO and Rondae (Lula) Horton of Cibolo, TX; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and his House of Prayer to All Nations Church family.
