On November 24, 1931 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Henderson and Carrie Fowler were blessed with a baby girl, Stella. Stella was Henderson's second daughter and Carrie's first daughter. Their oldest daughter being much older and not at home, made Stella feel like an only child.
Stella loved playing baseball and other games as a child. She left Vicksburg, when she was a teenager. She is a product of the East St. Louis Public School System.
Stella loved to cook. Her first cooking job was at Miss Hullings in St. Louis, Missouri. After about 15 years of cooking, she went back to school and became a nursing assistant, finding employment with Jefferson Barracks Veteran's Hospital. She stayed here until she retired.
Stella married her childhood sweetheart, Samuel Thomas in her mid-teens. To this union, 5 children were born. Much later, she met and married James A. Hughes. To this union 5 children, were also born.
Stella joined the Seventh Day Adventist church and was baptized under the leadership of Pastor R.C. Brown. She has served as an usher, sung in the choir and served as a deaconess. Even through her sick days, she still served the Lord, passing out literature and visiting those in the nursing homes. She was a witness for the Lord until her dying day. Her doors always remained open to those in need. Stella never met a stranger. She enjoyed reading the Bible and volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul, where she volunteered for 10+ years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and church family and friends.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband, James Hughes and two sons, Dwight Thomas and Samuel Thomas, Jr.
