Obituary

On a cold winter day, January 20th, 1945 in St. Louis, MO, a bright spirit was sent to warm the hearts of Mable Reynolds and Madison Garrett. That warm spirit was Phyllis Lolita Garrett aka Caldonia and Sissy. Her parents including her Stepfather, John Dandridge, all preceded her in death.

Phyllis was very graceful with a sweet, generous spirit that was the shining light of the entire family. She was raised in Madison, IL and attended the Madison Public School District #12 where she accomplished high academic achievements in various high school clubs and organizations. She attended Southern Illinois University (SIUE) with a concentration in social services. Although she worked in several capacities, her proudest accomplishment was working in social services for the Riverbend Head Start Program. She touched many lives through her profession in and around the surrounding communities. Many were sad when she retired in 2012.

During her days at Madison High School, she met a handsome young man named Harvey L. Haynes. They fell in love and were united in holy matrimony for 53 years and to this union the Lord blessed them with one son, Terrence L. Haynes.

Phyllis confessed her hope in Christ at an early age. She was united with Southern Baptist Church in Madison, IL. She attended Sunday School, participated in the choir and was a leader in many other positions of the church. Later in life, she joined Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church with her husband and son. Phyllis was a member of the Mother's Board, Deaconess Board and was a Youth Coordinator.

Phyllis loved planning parties and holiday celebration for her family and friends. She would prepare an elaborate spread including an outstanding décor at each gathering. Phyllis took time out for the children in her neighborhood by providing necessities, candy and fun activities. She also served as a Girl Scout leader. We will truly miss the matriarch of our family.

Phyllis was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She departed this life early Monday morning, January 9, 2017 in Granite City, IL, but she will forever live in our hearts.

Mrs. Phyllis Lolita Haynes leaves to cherish her memories; a loving, devoted husband, Harvey L. Haynes; son, Terrence (Kim) L. Haynes; sisters, Gail Gordon, Sharon Johnson, Felicia Jackson, Gay (Verrell) Harley, and Carolyn (J.W.) Smith; brothers, Evan Dandridge, Gregory (Ramona) Dandridge, Madison (Andrea) Garrett, Jr., and Edwin Garrett; grandsons, Joseph Haynes and Xavier Haynes; sister-in-laws, Denova (Tony) Candies, Lyndora Haynes, Jeanetta (Jesse) Graham, Deborah Haynes, Marsha (James) Craten, Cora (Carl) McMorris; brother-in-laws, Cornel Haynes, Dwayne (Cynthia) Haynes, Dalfred (Debbie) Haynes, James (Carolyn) Branch, Lavon (Patricia) Jordan; and a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Extended Family and Friends.
