Mrs. Mary E. Thurman was born on September 26, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri to the union of John Albert Thurman  Sr. and Daisy Thurman. Her brother John L. Thurman and step-mother, Rita Thurman preceded her in death. Mary was affectionately called "Tiny" throughout her life because she weighed only 3lbs ad 4 ounces at birth.

Mary enjoyed people. She loved cooking, partying, and dancing. She was known for catering parties and weddings. She was also known by everyone for cleaning and cooking chitterlings. Mary was a member of Venus Lodge #1042 The Elles of The World.

Mary was a workaholic. She loved money, so she didn't mind working. She worked at various jobs in East St. Louis and surrounding areas. Mary enlisted in the United States Army where she served three years on Active Duty and she went on to do twenty-five years as an army reservist.
