Obituary

Mary Mickens was born July 30, 1930 in Noxubee, MS to Jim and Alice Moore. She was one of eight children. Her father, Jim Moore, mother, Alice Moore, husband, Odell Mickens, daughter, Mary Williams affectionately knowns as Nancy, grandson, Charles Williams, and her siblings, Jeanette Moore, Nance Moore, Georgia Williams, Sylvilla Ike, Wilda Black, Sallie O'Neal, Edna Mae Mickens, and Jimmie Lee Moore all preceded her in death.

Mary Mickens attended Lowndes County School District. After her teenage years and getting married, she moved to East St. Louis, IL with her daughter and family.

Mary Mickens received Christ at an early age. After meeting the love of her life, she married Mr. Odell Mickens and later moved to Hartford, CT. There she worked for St. Francis Hospital as a dietician until her retirement.

In 2016, after losing her daughter, husband, and grandson, Mary decided to relocate back close to her siblings' children where she would be loved and spoiled by them. Whatever she desired, they gave it to her and she was overjoyed by it. Her nephew, Albert Maurice (Butch) spoiled her the most. Every holiday, graduation, wedding or ordination ceremony, you can best believe she would be there.

Mary Mickens attended the Greater New Bethel Temple Church under the leadership of her nephew Elder Leroy Moore until his passing, then later under her other nephew, Elder James Odneal. She was a faithful member until her health declined.

During her illness, she NEVER lost her sense of humor. She kept you on the edge of your seat. LOL. You never knew what might come out of her mouth, and when it did, you would say, "AUNTIE!"

Mary Mickens fell asleep in Jesus sweet arms at Bria Nursing Home on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. She would have turned 93 years old on July 30.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family. She leaves to mourn her passing; a devoted caregiver and niece, Angela O'Neal of Centreville, IL; 4 great-grandsons; Charles E. Williams III, Chase, Chaz, and Chance of Hartford, CT; granddaughter-in-law, Jeryl Williams; 8 nieces, Annie Lark, Carrie Williams, Eula Ika, Delores Little, Deborah Hallman, Katie Mickens, and Janette Sanders; 9 nephews, John W.
