Obituary

Lois Elender Givhan-Nash was born June 9, 1929 in Pontotoc, Mississippi to the union of Walter and Loudella Givhan. She transitioned peacefully to her eternal resting place on October 24, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Illinois.

Lois met her husband, Roy Lee Nash and to the union four children were born: Micheline, Dacia, Gregory, and Roger. She was an avid reader with hundreds of books. As a matter of fact, several bookshelves failed to hold them and would break under the weight. But she always blamed the broken shelves on poor construction by the company or whoever handled the assembly. Never was she responsible for overloading the shelves.

Lois always stressed the importance of having an education. She graduated from high school in College Hill, MS and attended Mississippi Institute, where she thrived on the girls' basketball team, receiving numerous awards. The only person who stopped her success on the court was her brother Robert Givhan when she played against his college. Uncle Robert informed the team that they needed to watch her elbows. Lois was skilled in various areas. She would often tell stories of her making drapery during her youth and her working for Dr. Carter. Lois made an impression at her final employer Dillard's, where she served as an Interior Stylist.

All that met Lois knew that she had a strong relationship with God; she started her morning reading the Daily Word. She believed in the importance of being a servant, and when she regularly attended Parks Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church before the decline of her health, Lois served as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir Member, Treasurer, and the Missionary Society. In the community, she was a surrogate mom and surrogate grandmother to many. Lois would often say that she would not give you her opinion, but "If you open the door, I'm going to walk in." She was also one of the best cooks at Parks Chapel and in the family. You would hear whispers, "Which cake is Lois's " and "Which dressing is Lois's ?"

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Loudella Givhan; husband, Roy L. Nash; eleven siblings, Selma, Willie Membra, Dorothy, Bradley Kembra, Bertha Mae, Vera, Carrie Lou, Alice Ree, Walter Adams, Robert Earl, and Charlie Parks; grandchild, Reishia Douglas; great grandchild, Rhegan Ferrell.

Lois Elender Givhan-Nash leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Micheline Harris, Dacia Nash-Travis, Gregory (Zena) Nash, and Roger Nash. grandchildren, Delicia Ferrell, Danielle Harris, Deanna Moton, Keiland Nash, Ajina Hill, Darrious Nash, and Ratisha Nash; great-grandchildren, Delila, Jadon, Ronald, Javarrie, Riley, Justin, Justice, Destiny, Afrika, and Kori; two sisters-in-law, Hattie Pearl Givhan and Maggie Nash; a host of nieces, nephews, greats, great-greats, other relatives and friends.
