Lamont
Robinson
Oct 31, 1962 — May 1, 2023
Lamont Anthony Robinson was born October 31, 1962 (a Halloween baby) in East St. Louis, Illinois to Velvetee Spearman Robinson Dillard and Simp Robinson, Jr. He was the third of six children. As a child, Lamont could always be seen dribbling a basketball anywhere he went which led to his nickname becoming "Dribbles" that was shortened in later years to "Dribbs". Lamont accepted Christ at an early age as he was reared in the church and taught about God by his mother and godparents, Rev. and Mrs. Johnson. Lamont also spent time as a child in the Goose Hill Community with his grandparents, Simp and Margaret Robinson.
Lamont was educated in East St. Louis School District #189, graduating with the East St. Louis Sr. High School Class of 1980. The constant dribble of the basketball, time spent at the East St. Louis Boy's Club with former mentor, O.C. Hughes, and his special gift from God provided him the means to grow into one of East St. Louis' finest athletes. Lamont helped lead East St. Louis Sr. High to the state championship game during his junior year and he was honored to be an Illinois High School All-Star Award during his senior year. As a 6ft. 3in. guard, Lamont went on to further his education and career with basketball by attending Cisco Community College and later Lamar University.
Lamont was a beast on the basketball court, as any opponent or fan would agree. He was especially grateful for the support of his mother and his aunt, Rose, who attended most of his games. His performance as a star player for Lamar University, led him to being the 1984 NBA 5th Round (2nd pick, 95th overall) for the Chicago Bulls. He completed his professional basketball career as a member of the international basketball team in Spain. Lamont was fortunate to travel back to Lamar University on last year in which they retired his jersey with support of family and friends.
Lamont returned to East St. Louis to be with family at the end of his professional basketball career. He was proud to serve as a basketball coach for Monroe Elementary School and was able to mentor man children along the way. He continued to show some of the great attributes of a basketball guard throughout his daily life - he still had a desire to win and never gave up. He focused on others and valued every possession, especially his daughter, Chelsey. Lamont had a heart of gold. He would give you the shirt off of his back or his last dime if you needed it. He cherished every relationship that he had with family and friends, making sure his feelings, whether good or bad, were known. He had a love for watching sports, hanging out with family and his boys. He loved a good homecooked meal which he would find at someone's home or cook himself. He had a special love for kids and was always passing out money. He was the laughter in a room; his favorite sayings were, "Get out thur" and "F*ck wrong withchu."
Lamont moved to Omaha, Nebraska to be with other relatives. He chose the career of roofing at Hometown Roofing, where he excelled. He loved to impress and found great joy in being well groomed and dressed. He had great bonds with everybody and have several nicknames; he was known to refer to himself as Ralph Lauren or Mr. Polo, his favorite clothing designers and was also known as Boss Man, St. Louis Baller and Lou. He also loved to walk and most of the time you could catch him with a bottle of Budweiser in his hand.
Lamont completed his earthly mission on Monday morning, May 1, 2023. He was preceded in death by his son, Jarvis Jeron Christian; sister, Bernadette Robinson Butchee and his parents.
His memory will be forever cherished by his daughter, Chelsey Robinson; sisters, Sheila Robinson and Adriena (Gilbert) White; brothers, Sebastian Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. Simp Robinson III and James Dillard Jr.; aunt, Tiny "Boo" Spearman; stepmother, Dorothy Holmes; and a host of children he called his own, nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives and friends. He was also blessed to have a dear friend, Andrea "Meek" Reeves; special friend, Blanche "Wifey" Wallace and long-time friend, Gerri Christian McCottrell in his life.
Although Lamont was not a church-goer, he believed in God. If a scripture had to be given as the epitome of his life it would be 1 Corinthians 13:13 - "So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
