Obituary

Kenneth Toomer, the son of Malvia Williams Toomer and William Edward Toomer, was born on September 24, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. He spent the first twelve years of his life in Kinloch, Missouri, the oldest African American community to be incorporated in the state of Missouri.

Kenneth is a 1961 graduate of Soldan High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Missouri, majoring in accounting and minoring in both economics and mathematics. He was proud to have worked his way through college by bussing tables in restaurants. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, he became the second African American to pass the CPA exam in the state of Missouri. Ken went on to have a lucrative career as a CPA, starting first at Arthur Andersen (one of the Big Five of American accounting firms), then moving on to Ford Motor Company and General Dynamics before establishing his own independent accounting firm in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The firm, Kenneth Toomer, CPA, was the first black-owned CPA firm in the St. Louis area. During the 1970's, he helped form the National Association of Minority CPAs. He was also one of the organizers for the St. Louis chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

Later in his career, he became the Budget Director for East St. Louis School District 189, working in that role for 17 years until retirement. While working for the school district, he continued to be a tax advisor, where he loved working with clients as a financial consultant. Ken was also an active member of the Shriners and the East St. Louis Chapter of the Lions Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Zoo Association and for Central Medical Center. In 2011, he was honored with his wife Charlotte by the East St. Louis Chapter Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc for dedicated service to the community. Kenneth had been an active member of the Modern Free and Accepted Masons of the World, Inc.

Inheriting a thirst for travel from his mother, Ken visited places around the world, including Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. Although he traveled often for work as minority contractor for the Small Business Administration, in his younger years he had no qualms about packing a bag, loading up the car, and taking off for trips around the United States and Mexico. In his later years, he developed a fondness for cruises and enjoyed visiting ports in a variety of countries with Charlotte, the love of his life and with whom he spent the last 35 years.

Kenneth was the fifth out of six children and was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Annette Eloise Castleberry and Rose Marie Page, and his brothers Wilbert and Eugene Toomer.

Kenneth leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Charlotte; his youngest sister, Regenia (Richard) Griffin; his children, Kara Toomer Mueller and Kenneth (Ana) Toomer; Eric (Rochonda) Smith, Edward (Vickey) Smith; his grandchildren Jaume Toomer, Xavier Smith, Aleph Smith, Imani Smith, Malik Smith, Erica Milner, Tenesha (Dale) Dunn; his mother-in-law Estine Weston; his aunts Nellie Williams, Mary Penn, Lee Annie Bonner, Bestine Tourijigian, and Dr. Lilian Parks; his nephews Tydarryl (Camille) Toomer, Reginald Page (deceased), Anthony Page, Kevin Castleberry, Durwin Toomer (deceased), William (Kenya) Robinson, Kadesh (Destini) White, Kaleb (Amber) White; his nieces Rosalind Toomer, Malvia Page, Dawn (Donte) Kendall, Kellee (Justin) Love, Justice Arnold, Truth Arnold; his brother-in-laws Dr. Keathen (Dr. Melvina) Wilson and Willie (Sherie) Arnold; his sister-in-law Crystal (Wayne) White; his special niece Rose Marie Page and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
