Obituary

The sweet, sweet spirit of Janice G. Nicholson entered this world on October 10, 1947, born to the union of Robert and Birdie Nicholson.

Janice, affectionately known as Aunt Janice by her nieces and nephews, was raised by her beloved aunt, the late Rittie Bennermon.

Understanding no one can walk alone without God, she accepted Christ at an early age at St. Paul Baptist Church under the tutelage of the late Rev. E. T. Caviness; then remained under the teachings of the late Rev. Obie Rush.

She was educated in District #189, graduating from East St. Louis Senior High School. She then furthered her studies by receiving her Bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff before later obtaining the credentials necessary to become a guidance counselor.

A true East Side Flyer, as she would proudly let us know, she experienced a full circle moment when she served as a guidance counselor at her alma mater following being a homebound teacher. In 2012, she retired from Wyvetter Younge Middle School.

In addition, Aunt Janice was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INC., the Eastern Star and the Links.

Aunt Janice's joys included shopping, eating dinner and a steadfast love for her family and spending time with them. Like her sisters, she loved the finer things of life and collected Waterford Crystal and Special Edition Barbies. Big Sister Minnie and she relished their days at Fischer's restaurant where they were permanent fixtures.

When Aunt Janice became bedbound, she was blessed with a total of nine caregivers and one senior companion. The ladies became family and were the best workers ever. A true gem of what an aunt should be, she treated her nieces and nephews as if she bore them herself. Aunt Janice will forever be in our hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Birdie Nicholson; aunt, Rittie C. Bennermon; siblings, Minnie, Doris, Frank, and Robert Jr.; her favorite nephew, Gerald who passed on September 10th.

On September 16, 2025, His loving, caring, and generous servant returned to her heavenly home.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her five nieces, Tasha (Andre) Fulton, Robbie (James Sr.) Edmond, Katrina (Larry) Williams, Kenya "Kay Kay" Jackson and Linda Lawson; two nephews, Raynard (Ratesha) Nicholson, and Jerome (Teddy) Williams; a special sister-in-love, Varrie Nicholson; a special niece-in-love, Quanshanda "Queenie" Nicholson; nine great nephews, James Edmond Jr., Nicholas Edmond, Kendall Edmond, Johnathan Williams, Evan Williams, Ryan Nicholson, and Raynard Nicholson Jr.; three great nieces, McKenzie Williams, Aiyanna Nicholson and Andrionna Fulton; special cousins, Darnell Spencer and Marie Lawson; four special friends, Ozell Epperson, Mildred Arers-Poke, Doran Swanson, and Sandra Tolden, along with a host of other family and friends.
