James Cortez Darty was born on June 22, 1977 in Hayti, MO to Georgeann Darty and James Harris. He was the 5th child born to this union. His mother, Georgeann, and brother Tyrone preceded him in death.

James lived in Caruthersville, MO for a short time. His family moved to East St. Louis in 1980. James was educated in the East St. Louis School District. He attended Miles D. Davis and Rock Jr. High School. James was a resident of East St. Louis until 2001.

When he moved to Seattle, Washington, he always called East St. Louis home. James loved laughing and joking with family. While living in Seattle, James worked various jobs. He later had a son that was the spitting image of him.

James visited his family a few times since he moved away but he always made sure to keep in touch with his siblings.

James joined Sinclair Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Coleman as he wanted a closer relationship with God. James always talked about his childhood and growing up in East St. Louis. Being one of the younger siblings, he always wanted to give advice and remind us that we were getting older.

On February 9, 2024 , James joined his mother and brother. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his father, James Harris; his son, Ja'Mhiez Darty; his brothers, Samuel Darty and Andrew McClorn; sisters, Velma Dorsey, Cynthia Darty, and Markelia Jenkins; 17 nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
