Obituary

Mr. General Wilson King, Jr. (known as G.W. Jr.) of Falls Church, Virginia expired on Saturday, February 22, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was born to the union of General Wilson King, Sr. and Edith (Pearson) King on April 15, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri. To this union three children were born: Yvonnejenai "Nana", Fayetta "Jean" and G.W. Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Growing up in East Saint Louis, Illinois, the family attended Mount Zion Baptist Church. At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was taught the importance of getting an education. He attended Johnson Elementary School, Hughes Quinn Junior High School and Lincoln High School. He enjoyed playing football just like his father. Richard Brooks, his cousin, was his head coach in high school. Math was his best subject in high school. His father mentioned to him that he should major in architect or engineering because he was good in drafting class. He decided that civil engineering would be his line of study. His father reached out to some of his political contacts, especially Senator Everett Dirksen, to get him a scholarship.

After graduating high school, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. During his years at SIU-C he attended Rock Hill Baptist Church and taught Sunday School. On the weekends he would go to parties held by black fraternities and sororities and adjusted well to the diversity on campus. He pledged Omega Psi Phi because that fraternity seemed unique. After he pledged, he realized that two of his relatives were also in the same fraternity. He became a third-degree Mason at the age of 21.

During his senior year at SIU-C he met Edna and her sister Dorothy at a party on campus. He received her real name and phone number decided to call her for a date the next weekend. When he called her mother answered and told her that General Wilson King was calling, he could hear her telling Edna "There's some General on the phone", They dated for about six months before he graduated from SIU-C with a BS in civil engineering. After graduation, his cousin Shed Smith encouraged him to go to Washington, D.C. to study at George Washington University. He applied and was accepted  to the two-year master's program in urban and regional planning at George Washington.

He arrived in D.C. in September of 1970 and intended on finding a new church home. While trying to locate one church that he could not find he saw another church called 10th Street Baptist Church. He was a member of 10th Street Baptist Church for fifty years and met many friends while attending.

During his first Christmas holiday while attending George Washington, he asked Edna to marry him. She accepted and the wedding date was set for September 5, 1971, the same day as his sister Jean's birthday. They were married at Edna's church Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Murphysboro, Illinois. In 1972, he graduated with his master's degree in urban and regional planning. He was offered a job with the D.C. government.

Their honeymoon trip sparked a dream to travel the world. They set a goal to travel the world in the next five years and write a book about their travels. He planned to achieve that dream with a full-time job and his wife as a full-time college student. They have traveled to sixty-two countries and all fifty states.

By 1977 he had completed two books, one about his family and the other about him and Edna's travels around the world. A friend and previous coworker Bob Cosby told him about a business he was starting. Bob knew they liked to travel and that they could do business while traveling. Edna did not want to attend but later got curious and decided to go. Neither had never heard of Amway but financial independence and travel got them interested. After attending major functions, they became committed to the business and at thirty years old he could see them financially independent. On August 20, 1981, at thirty-three years old, he and Edna celebrated their financial independence with a banquet at the Hilton in Washington, D.C. with more than two thousand members in attendance including family members.

G.W. Jr. leaves behind a loving and devoted wife on 53 years: Edna (Adams) King, a beautiful family, an abundance of godchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and business associates. He was blessed to be able to handle his problems and happy to share a basic foundation of life that has helped him do so: First he knew that God was in control of his life. Things happen in life that you have no control over but with God all things are a possible. Having a balance in the spiritual, social, physical, and mental areas of life helped him be successful.
