Obituary

Geneva Jeffries Mayfield made her peaceful transition from the comfort of her home on April 4, 2025. Born on September 23, 1943, in Humboldt, TN, Geneva was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who dedicated her life to her family and faith.

In 1964, Geneva welcomed the birth of her daughter, Paula Jeffries. She later married Otha Gene Mayfield, and together, they celebrated he birth of their daughter, Alma Mayfield.

Geneva graduated from Merry High School in May of 1962 in Jackson, TN. Geneva accepted Christ as a youth at Macedonia Baptist Church in Jackson, TN. After relocating to Illinois, she became a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church in East St. Louis, IL, under the leadership of Norman E. Owens Sr. Geneva actively served in various capacities, including the custodial team, The Chancel Ensemble Choir, The Young Matrons, and the Macedonia Baptist Church Bowling League, where the spirit of service and commitment to her community shone brightly.

Geneva was a dedicated employee, working as a Sales Girl at Boyd's Department Store, a mechanic at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, and a counter clerk at Pope's Cafeteria in St. Louis, MO. She retired on September 30, 2005, as a custodian from East St. Louis School District #189 after completing 27 years of service, consistently exceeding her performance and evaluations. Those who knew Geneva recognized her talent for renewing and beautifying everything around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hoyel and Doris Beckum Jeffries; four brothers, Roy Fair, Hoyel Jeffries Jr., John Cleveland Jeffries, and Joseph Edward Jeffries; two sisters, Flora Bell Jeffries and Doris Imogene Jeffries Scott.

Geneva leaves to cherish her memories her two daughters, Paul Smith of East St. Louis, IL and Alma (Paul) Singleton, Jr. of Fairview Heights, IL; three stepdaughters, Kimberly Meitzenheimer (Jessie) Granger of East St. Louis, IL, Delores Yarbrough of Pontoon Beach, IL, and Kayla (Hortense) McIntosh of East St. Louis, IL; three stepsons, Darnell Holmes, Valdez (Pauline) Meitzenheimer, and Otha John (Angie) Meitzenheimer, all of East St. Louis, IL; two sisters, Martha Edwards of Milwaukee, WI, and Linda Patrick of St. Louis, MO; one brother, Carl Dwain Jeffries of Jackson, TN; four grandchildren, Destinee (Darius) Clark-Wallace of St. Louis, MO, Jacquelyn and James Smith, and Ayanna Jett of East St. Louis, IL; one god daughter, Sharee Thomas; five godsons, Michael (Liz) Lennix of Greenville, IL, Harry (Djena) Lennix of Los Angeles, CA, Vaughn (Valerie) Henderson of Denver, CO, Sean (Nekeisha) Thomas of Slidell, LA and Adrian (Andria) Hendricks of Jefferson City, MO; four dear friends, Ellerine Moses of Union City, TN, Shirley Thomas and Cassandra Emerson of Denver, CO, and Leanna Cole of Atlanta, GA; six great-grandchildren, Janae, Gianna, and Grace Clark-Wallace, Nova Kelley, Journiee Smith, and Lei'lani Liddell, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
