It is with deep love and gratitude that we remember the life of Edwina Rhodes-Hollins, a dedicated community servant, volunteer, and leader whose unwavering commitment to others left an indelible mark on every community she touched. Edwina was born on November 12, 1938, and passed away on August 4, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she was residing. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Hollins, who passed in 2000, and the sister of the late Libby Dotts and Marie Griffin of East Saint Louis, Illinois.
Edwina's lifelong mission was service. She served the East Saint Louis community for many years as a Grant Writer and Outreach Human Services Specialist, using her exceptional skills in communication and public speaking to bring people together and create lasting change. She was a proud President of Toastmasters International Local 2878, guiding others in the art of effective speaking and leadership.
Her professional journey included years with the Southern Illinois University Outreach Center - East "Project Success," where she worked with elementary school children, parents, health agencies, and DARE Program officers to strengthen community safety and well-being. In public service, she worked in the Mayor's Quarters as a Crime Victims Director/Community Coordinator alongside the Illinois Attorney General's Victim's Assistance program. Later, she served under contract as a consultant for the East Saint Louis Chamber of Commerce, building stronger relationships between local merchants and community developers to promote growth and collaboration.
Beyond Illinois, Edwina continued her service in California. She served on the Winnetka Neighborhood Council as Chair of Outreach Events volunteered at the Robert M. Wilkinson Multipurpose Senior Citizen in Northridge, and read to children at the West Valley Regional Branch Library in Reseda as part of the Grandparents and Books program.
Her career and volunteer work also included partnerships with law enforcement, social services, schools, health agencies, and civic organizations to address domestic violence, drug and alcohol prevention, and community collaboration. She hosted numerous fundraisers, banquets, and health fairs, all with the goal of enriching lives and fostering unity.
She is survived by her seven children, Janet Shields-Scott (spouse), Rodney Scott, Richard E. Hopgood, Patrina Hopgood-Stewart (Spouse), Julias Stewart, Esq. Markel Watts, Darryl Watts (Spouse), Tessla Watts and Marlin Watts, and is preceded in death by her beloved sons, Odell Earl Hopgood Jr. She also leaves behind a legacy of love through her thirteen children, extended family, friends. Through previous marriage, she was loved and adored by her daughters, Fazio Beverly, Lavonda Hicks, Salina Watts and the late Rhonda Watts.
Edwina will be remembered for her steadfast service, her gift for connecting people, and her unwavering belief in the power of community. Her warmth, leadership, and devotion will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
