Obituary

Doris Jeanette Melvin was born on December 14, 1942, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to the late Peter and Bob Ella Hendricks. From a young age, she displayed a vibrant spirit, kind heart, and natural ability to bring joy to those around her. She was a proud product of the East St. Louis Public School System, where she completed her high school education in 1960 and began pursuing her passion for healthcare and serving others.

A fearless advocate, devoted healthcare professional, and pillar of strength within her community, Doris played a vital role in labor advocacy and union leadership during her years at St. Mary's Hospital. She served as a respected Shop Steward who stood alongside healthcare workers in the fight for fair treatment and better working conditions. She proudly walked picket lines with unwavering courage and commitment, helping lead historic unionization efforts in the Midwest that included both hospital staff and physicians. Above all, she will be remembered for her compassion, service, resilience, and the lasting impact she made on countless lives throughout East St. Louis. Caregiving was simply who she was, and to many, she became a mother to the neighborhood.

Doris knew no strangers and treated everyone she encountered with love, warmth, and care. Her home became a place of gathering during holidays and after church, always filled with laughter, conversation, and the comforting aroma of her cooking. Known especially for her chitlins and dressing, she made sure her loved ones were always full, fed, and cared for.

Beyond her professional accolades, Doris was the central pillar of her family and community. Known affectionately by her brothers as "Channel 2 News," she was the keeper of all information, always accurate and always the first to know. If anyone in the family needed guidance, support, or news, she was the first and final call.

Above all, faith guided every aspect of her life. She was a faithful and active member of Parks Chapel AME Church until her relocation from East Saint Louis, where she proudly served on the Stewardship Board and remained deeply involved in the church's ministry and service to others. Even after relocating, she remained faithfully connected to her church family and continued worshipping through the church live-streamed services.

She embraced life fully and found joy in the people and traditions she loved the most. Each year, she attended her late sister Carrie's annual casino bus trip. After the passing of her sister Carrie, she became the sponsor of those annual casino bus trips traveling to surrounding casinos with her close friends and loved ones. Doris deeply valued community service and was an avid supporter of the programs and outreach efforts sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Through her niece Vickie, she became a familiar and beloved presence at many Delta events throughout the Metro-East area.

An avid reader and active member of several book clubs in her community, Doris always made time for her stories, cherished long conversations on the phone, and was known for being sharp as a tack , especially when navigating her iPhone.

More than anything, Doris was devoted to her family and took immense pride in being a mother. Outside of all her accomplishments and joys in life, her greatest pride was raising her six sons: Avery, Darrick, Rodney, Mark, Richard (Gannon), and Mario. There was never a moment when she did not speak proudly of her boys or celebrate their successes with everyone she encountered. Above all, she desired for her sons to remain connected, supportive of one another, and rooted in the love of family. The bond she hoped for them continues to stand as part of the legacy of love and unity she poured into her family throughout her life.

While she is now reunited in peace with her parents, Peter and Bob Ella Hendricks, her beloved son, Rodney, and her siblings, Carrie, Kenneth, and Godfrey, her spirit lives on through her devoted family. She leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Anna Marie (Ocie) Tolson and Jacqueline Hunt; three brothers, Peter (Patricia) Hendricks, Ronald Hendricks, and James (Ann) Hendricks; five sons, Avery (Rachel) Hendricks, Darrick (Tiffany) Hendricks, Mark Melvin, Richard (Gannon) Melvin, and Mario (Samara) Melvin; 11 grandchildren, Kendall (Katy) Hendricks, Darryanna (Roderick) Williams, Cierra (Derwin) Kinston, Ava Hendricks, Darrick Hendricks Jr., Kaila Clayborn, Khamryn (Lenny) Sattlefield, Debra (Bertrand) Bernard, Makayla Melvin, MaKenzie Melvin, and Madison Melvin; 12 great grandchildren, Jamauriae Williams, Jai'de Williams, Jaxson Williams, Jayvyn Hendricks, Amelia Siravo, Kallie Hendricks, Isabella Hendricks, Ishaya Hendricks, Bertrand Bernard III, Malachi Bernard, Zion Bernard, and Khylen Sattlefield; 5 beloved grand dogs, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and loved ones.

A true warrior in every sense, Doris faced life's challenges with remarkable strength, grace, and unwavering faith. She rarely complained, choosing instead to meet each day with resilience, courage, and quiet determination.

Surrounded by love, she peacefully transitioned on April 30, 2026, in Washington, D.C., leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and enduring faith. Her spirit will live on in every shared story, every echo of laughter, and every act of love inspired by her life. We will forever cherish the life and legacy of Doris Jeanette Melvin.
