Charlene Elizabeth Powell was born on April 21, 1950 in St. Louis, MO to the union of Charlie Powell and Annie Bell Haymar. Charlene was the first of seven girls.
Charlene confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. She united with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Garfield Hubbard, Sr. She served on the Usher Board and was a faithful supporter of the National Baptist Evangelist Movement. She was also a member of the Eastern Light Chapter #68, Order of the Eastern Star.
Charlene was raised in East St. Louis and received her education in East St. Louis School District #189. She also attended the East St. Louis State Community College and the Professional Business College in St. Louis, MO.
Charlene was a licensed day care provider and foster parent. She was employed by Monsanto Chemical in Sauget, IL and the Gatesworth Senior Living Community. She retired as a bus attendant from First Student Bus Company in Belleville, IL. Charlene enjoyed gardening flowers inside and outside the home, traveling, attending flea markets and servicing others.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Jones.
Charlene Elizabeth Powell departed this life on February 23, 2021. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her two daughters, Anjanette Powell-Manzy and Monica Powell; five grandchildren, Erin Powell, Gabrielle Powell, Emily King, Ana King and Treamon Fields; five sisters, Mary Thomas-Cann, JoAnn Thomas, Linda Gause (Yul), Susie Thomas, and Lisa Thomas; numerous other relatives, church family and friends.
