Obituary

Carvel Duane Claggett known affectionately as "Duane" was born on October 13, 1964 to Anna Ruth Claggett and Charles Claggett Sr. in East St. Louis, Illinois. Carvel was raised in a loving home with his beloved brothers Erwin and Charles, and sister Tina.

Carvel's early years of education included Dunbar Elementary and Madison Junior High School. He then attended Madison Sr. High School where he was star athlete and a key cog on the State Champion Basketball team in 1981. He was a very intelligent and loving soul who believed in hard work and leaves the memory of being an all-around good person. Upon graduating High School in 1982, Carvel earned an athletic scholarship to John A. Logan College in Carbondale, Illinois where he attended and played basketball for one year before returning home to Venice, Illinois. At which time, Carvel would enter the United States Navy in 1983. After bootcamp, he would serve a stint in Guam and ultimately serve his country until the year 1987.

Carvel would then return home to his high school sweetheart, Mildred (Toosie) Ball and his beautiful baby girl Cierra (Claggett) Ewing. Carvel and Toosie were married in 1988 and would go on to have two more children, Carvel Claggett, Jr. and Cranston Claggett. Later on in his life, Carvel would be blessed to have two more children in Darius Sutton and the baby of the bunch Carli Denise Claggett.

Carvel's love for his family was no secret to anyone who knew him. He grew up as a member of New Salem Baptist Church, where he worshiped and served with his entire family. Carvel's Christian values and love for family were instilled by his late Mother, Anna Claggett who he adored until her passing on May 2 nd , 2020. He genuinely cared and loved his kids and showed it at every chance he would get. Whenever he was around his kids you can feel the joy and love between them as the room would always be filled with laughter and they'll always remember his love of watching TV, playfully wrestling, and eating good, preferably fried rice or his favorite snack, popcorn.

Carvel passed unexpectedly on April 17, 2023 at the age of 58. Carvel was a resident of the Madison-Venice area and was well known for not only his athletic achievements as a star athlete, but also for his charismatic personality and love for his family and friends.

Carvel is survived by his children, Cierra (Jason) Ewing, Carvel (LeAnne) Claggett Jr., Cranston Claggett, Darius Sutton, and Carli Claggett. He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, Chloe Watts, Cayson Ewing, Cali Ewing, Caysi Ewing, Caiden Claggett, Caelan Claggett, Camryn Claggett. Along with his siblings, Charles Claggett Sr., Tina (Anthony) Greer, and Erwin (Trina) Claggett. He also leaves behind surviving uncles, George Anderson, Michael Anderson, and aunts Denise Anderson, Dorese Anderson along with a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Claggett, and Father Charles Claggett Sr. "Duane's" presence and love will be sorely missed by all of his family.
