Obituary

Byron Gettis Jr. (BJ), 19, was born on May 16, 2005 in Fairview Heights, IL, was called to rest on March 9, 2025. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend whose presence lit up the lives of those around him. BJ had a heart of gold, always ready to share a smile and lend a hand. His kindness, confidence, and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Those who knew BJ understood how much he valued his image. While his smile was his trademark, he made sure his hair, shoes, and appearance were always on point. He took pride in how he presented himself, embodying a sense of self-respect and individuality that was clear to all who knew him.

BJ was a proud graduate of O'Fallon Township High School, where he was known for his exceptional knowledge of technology. His passion for tech and his personal style were just a few of the things that set him apart. Above all, BJ was a young man who cherished his family and friends. He built his own path in life, marching to the beat of his own drum while maintaining strong ties to those who mattered most.

After high school, BJ chose to serve his country proudly by joining the U.S. Army Reserves, 383rd QUARTERMASTER Company. His dedication to service reflected his deep commitment to the values of duty and integrity. In 2018, BJ was baptized and born again at Sonlight Community Fellowship Church, where he developed a strong foundation in his faith. His belief in God was a source of strength throughout his life, guiding him in his actions and interactions with others.

BJ's warm smile, gentle spirit, and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He had an incredible ability to uplift those around him, always leaving a positive mark on the lives he touched. He is survived by his loving parents, Latricia Gettis and Byron Gettis, Sr.; his brother, Braylon Gettis; his grandparents, and a host of other family members and close friends who will carry his memory with them. BJ was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather, Earlie Gettis, Jr. Though his time with us was far too short, BJ's legacy of kindness, love, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
