Bertha
Samuel
Mar 27, 1940 — May 5, 2026
Bertha L. Samuel was born on March 27, 1940 in Columbus, Mississippi to the union of Curtis and Lula M. Harris. She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church. She later became a member at Truelight Baptist Church.
Bertha graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958. She later attended SIUE Edwardsville and graduated in 1973. Bertha united in wedlock to John Samuel, Sr. on June 4, 1961.
Bertha departed this life on May 5, 2026. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her husband John Samuel Sr.; three children, John Samuel Jr. (Crystal), Anthony Samuel, and Monica (Corey) Miller; sisters, Lillie Cannon and Curlie Thomas; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend, Florence Harris.
Bertha was a woman of unwavering faith, quiet strength, and endless compassion who touched countless lives through her kindness, grace, and gentle spirit. She carried herself with calmness and humility, offering love freely to everyone blessed to know her. Throughout every season of life -- including her final days -- she never complained. She continued to walk with dignity, faith, and remarkable strength.
She devoted 32 years of her life to her career in teaching, a profession she truly loved. Bertha found joy in helping others learn and grow. Her nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on the many students and lives she encountered over the years.
Outside of her family and work, Bertha enjoyed life's simple and beautiful moments. She loved reading, working crossword puzzles, and planting flowers each year. Bertha created beauty and warmth wherever she went, just as she did in the lives of those around her.
More than anything, Bertha cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and treasured friend. Her love will forever remain woven into the hearts of those she leaves behind.
While our hearts mourn her absence, we find comfort in God's promise. Bertha's journey is complete and she is now resting peacefully in His presence.
"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8
Bertha's love, faith, wisdom, and gentle presence will never be forgotten. Her life is a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
