Obituary

Bernice Jackson Keel Vales was born January 10, 1948 in Canalou, Missouri.  She was the first of two children from the union of Fannie Bell Gillespie-Jackson and Aaron Jackson.  Both parents have preceded her in death.

Bernice confessed her belief in Christ at an early age and was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.  Bernice married James Keel and James "Jabbo" Keel was born from that union.

Bernice received her primary and secondary education in East St. Louis District 189.  Bernice then went on to attain a bachelor's degree from SIU-Edwardsville and a master's degree from Lindenwood University.  Bernice taught in East St. Louis District 189 for over 20 years where she served as an English/Speech teacher.

Bernice was the Founder of New Day Social Club where she serviced those struggling primarily with drug and alcohol addictions.  She served as a sponsor and grand sponsor of many people.  Bernice was as a life changer in her community through her services at New Day Social Club.  Bernice al served on the East St. Louis library board.  She was a community activist who often volunteered for voter's registration drives.

Bernice was an avid reader and journaled daily.  She encouraged reading and journaling in her family.  Bernice also believed in daily meditation.  She was consistent in spending quiet time reading her daily meditations and then journaling her thoughts.

On February 25, 2020, Bernice departed this life while at home. Bernice leaves to cherish her memory, Samuel Smith; one child, James Keel, ; four grandchildren, Markesa Keel, Tanilia Keel, Raishona Keel and Passia Lyons ; grandchildren to include, Karter Keel and Joseph Keel; her brother, Eddie (Pearlie) Jackson, Sr.; a niece Emeka(Demarius) Jackson-Hicks and a nephew Eddie (Shantell) Jackson, Jr.; and a host of cousins and friends.
