Shirley’s Life Story

Shirley Ann Bell Smith was born to the union of Murphy and Anna Mae Brown Bell on July 21, 1938 in East St. Louis, Illinois. She was the third of three children. Her parents and both sisters, Lucille Bell Pleasant and Bettie Bell Smith preceded her in death.

She made her decision to follow Christ at a young age and joined St. Paul Baptist Church under the pastorage of the Late Reverend John DeShields.

Shirley Ann as we fondly called her, received her education in the city of East St. Louis, Illinois, graduating from Lincoln Senior High School in June, 1956. After graduation, she was employed at Barnes Hospital for 4 years before she married the “love of her life”, Ira Smith, Jr. on October 22, 1960 in East St. Louis, Illinois. To this union, two children were born, Kyle “Dino” Smith and Tracy Smith.

Shirley was what we called “happy-go-lucky” in many ways. She was taught during her younger days to roll with the punches in life and do your best always. She was employed in various positions; Lab Technician at Barnes Hospital of St. Louis, Missouri and Auxilary Aide for East St. Louis School District #189. She retired in June, 2000 after a total of 43 years.

Shirley was funny, energetic and loved to dress up at all times. She was very active in church – attended Sunday School – was a member of the Youth Choir and the Youth Usher Board – sang in the Sanctuary Choir several years. Her passion was ushering and in later years, she was Head Usher of Usher Ministry #2. Shirley assisted the candidates after Baptism and greeted each one personally.

On Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Shirley joined her sisters and the Bell girls were together again in Heaven.

Precious memories will be cherished by her children, Kyle “Dino” Smith, Tracy (Terrence) Hargrove; grandchildren, Courtney (Randy) Lockett of Tulsa, OK, Katrina Smith, Terrence Hargrove, II and Kyle D. Hargrove all of East St. Louis, IL; special cousins, Ernestine E. Rives of St. Louis, MO and Marcella Lewis Phillips; one uncle; numerous nieces and nephews; St. Paul Baptist Church family and a multitude of friends; special family friends are LaDonna Singleton, Annette Calhoun and Iola Harrington.
